Carly Simon suing Starbucks
Carly Simon filed suit against the coffee giant alledging that its business decisions with respect to a joint venture with her 2008 release, This Kind of Love, adversely affected greater retail sales of the CD.
Starbucks made the CD available in stores in limited number, then slashed prices when it became readily available, negatively implying, says the Simon legal camp, that the CD could not be sold at full price.
The New York Times reported that her CD sold only 124,000 copies, and Simon blames the sluggishness on Starbucks’ decisions to shorten their in-store music program, which was a joint venture with Concord Music.
Starbucks issued a statement refuting her claims, arguing, “Unfortunately, sales continued to lag as the title received tepid response from music consumers. Other retailers faced the same fate with this CD.”
Simon has a new CD coming out late October entitled Never Been Gone, with will be followed by a European tour in early 2010. This release will have nothing to do with Starbucks.
